CoolSculpting® (aka fat freezing or cryolipolysis) is a non-surgical fat-reduction method that helps contour the body. It uses controlled cooling to act on fat cells in specific areas. CoolSculpting® is designed to target stubborn fat pockets in areas such as the thighs, abdomen and chin and is suited to individuals who would prefer to avoid surgery.
The CoolSculpting® procedure was developed after scientific studies investigating the effects of cold temperatures on fat cells. They found that although the skin, nerves, blood vessels and surrounding areas were not destroyed, the fat cells had become vulnerable and died.
CoolSculpting® or fat-freezing treatments can target fat cells in various body areas, such as the stomach, abdomen, hips, back and chin. It is also used to address visible excess fat that may be located:
Cryolipolysis procedures can also be used to treat the following:
Additionally, if contouring irregularities are present following a liposuction procedure, technicians can use fat-freezing treatments.
Using the large Zeltiq applicator, we can treat two areas simultaneously. This reduces the overall treatment time by about 50% in some Coosculpting procedures.
At Chelsea Cosmetics, we use Zeltiq CoolSculpting® technology for cryolipolysis (fat freezing). The length of each treatment varies, depending on the number of areas being addressed. Usually, treatments take 30 to 60 minutes.
A typical session may involve the following steps:
Following treatment, the body processes the affected fat cells gradually over several weeks. The timing and extent of changes can differ between patients, and your individual response will be discussed during your consultation.
After the CoolSculpting® procedure, the treated areas may gradually change shape over time. In the first few weeks, it is common to notice temporary effects such as swelling, redness or tenderness. These effects usually settle as the area heals.
The extent and timing of results can vary between patients. Some individuals may notice changes over the coming months, while others may take longer. Maintaining a stable weight with a balanced lifestyle is essential, as weight fluctuations can influence the overall outcome.

Suitable candidates for CoolSculpting® should have:
Although CoolSculpt® is beneficial for many, it’s not for everyone. For example, individuals with pacemakers or defibrillators, or those with poor circulation, are not suitable candidates for fat-freezing procedures. Breastfeeding or pregnant women must wait until they have given birth and finished breastfeeding before considering the procedure.
Individuals with any skin condition, such as eczema or dermatitis, or a wound in the treated area must wait for the issue to resolve before commencing treatment in that area.
NB: CoolSculpting® is not a method for weight loss. Instead, it helps address stubborn areas of the body that don’t respond to regular adherence to healthy diet and exercise regimens.
Your first consultation is the first step in determining whether CoolSculpting® is appropriate for you.

COMMON QUESTIONS
A CoolSculpt® treatment can take anywhere between 35 and 60 minutes. This time depends on the number and size of the areas receiving treatment.
You may notice mild to moderate discomfort during or after the procedure. Common sensations during treatment can include cold or a pulling or tingling sensation, which often settle as the area becomes numb. After the procedure, temporary effects such as numbness, redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising, or itching may occur in the treated areas.
Some patients may require more than one CoolSculpt® session, depending on the treatment goals. Sessions are usually spaced apart, and changes may take time to become noticeable.
Potential risks and complications of CoolSculpt® may include:
The cost of CoolSculpting can vary based on several factors, including the number of areas treated, the number of sessions recommended, and the clinic’s location. Pricing is discussed during consultation, so you are clear about the costs before proceeding.
CoolSculpting® can treat visible fat bulges in various areas of the body, such as the submental area (under the chin), abdomen, flanks, thighs, bra area, back, under the buttocks and upper arms.
Yes, CoolSculpting® can help target visible fat bulges, such as those under the chin. Often, two treatments are required to target this area. Results may be seen after six weeks, with final results noticeable around 12 weeks post-treatment.
During a CoolSculpting® procedure, fat cells are frozen. They soon die, and over the next few weeks, they are gradually removed from the body through the body’s natural elimination process.
The cooling begins during the first few minutes of your session, where you’ll typically feel intense cold. This should soon subside as the treated area numbs. Depending on the treatment area, you may feel some suction.
After your treatment, you may feel some tingling. Your practitioner will then massage the treated area for approximately two minutes to break up the crystallised fat cells. After your treatment, you should be able to return to your normal activities.
CoolSculpting® sessions vary in length depending on the number of areas treated during a single appointment. At Chelsea Cosmetics in Melbourne, our advanced CoolSculpting® machine can treat a patient for 35 to 75 minutes, depending on the applicator used.
